Wisdom At Work is dedicated to the spiritual well being and personal fulfillment of individuals and to the vitality of their organizations.

We accomplish our mission by creating a sense of belonging, modeling authenticity, and holding the space that allows for transformation and co-creation.

Why We Do What We Do

Founded on the belief that the adventure of work is a spiritual practice, Wisdom at Work provides insightful learning, authentic connection and the opportunity to transform organizations through our monthly luncheons, evening events, sponsored workshops and online resources. Drawing on the wisdom practices and inspired examples of a wide range of innovative thinkers, successful business leaders and insightful consultants, we provide a sense of community and practical tools to explore the meaningful journey of work. We are especially grateful to all of our volunteer speakers (at workshops and at luncheons) plus all of our dedicated members that make our work possible.

Change of Plans! WAW Networking Event

Please join us on Jan. 27th at our regular luncheon time for an intentional, heart-based networking event. Bring your own ideas, questions and curiosities for your personal journey of the spiritual adventure of work. We will provide the container (and lunch and pie, of course)for all of us to explore and design our future. We will be breaking down into smaller groups based on topics of interest, getting to know each other in deeper ways to actualize the change we want to see in the world through our work.

Our January speaker, Patti DeNucci, is unexpectedly unable to speak at our luncheon. Instead of being sad that a master networker will not be there to talk to us about networking, we have decided to experience some intentional networking instead. This is a great opportunity to go way beyond the standard meet and greet. When Patti notified us of the change in her plan, we realized that this was our first open door for moving into the next phase. It is likewise, your opportunity to step up and be a part of this evolution. What is working for you at work?; What areas would you like to improve or get help with?

One thing that we have learned over the years is that the WAW membership is a wonderful group of people – actually living into their authenticity – both personally and professionally. The most consistent feedback that we receive from participants at all of our events is that WAW feels like home.“The people I meet here feel like the tribe I have been looking for. Please give me more opportunity to play with them.”

WAW began as a book club, studying the Spiritual Audit of Corporate America by Ian Mitroff. After a year of book discussions, one of the founders threatened to leave if the group did not actually “do” something. Thus in the spring of 2002, the luncheons were born. The WAW Council recently held our annual planning retreat and determined that something more wants to happen, that some change is in the air. For 10 years we have been presenting inspiring luncheons about bringing your whole self to work. Now it feels like it is time to become more about how to help our tribe do just that. We feel like members are longing for something more. We are at another transition point.

Although, we do already have several great speakers lined up for 2012, the organization is ready to try something a little different. Whether you think the tribe includes a small group of dedicated wisdom seekers or the whole planet doesn’t really matter. We believe that when we follow our passion, let go of the outcome and trust that the perfect innovation will emerge – then amazing things can happen.

Any organization is only as vibrant as the engagement of its members. The untapped potential of this group is fantastic. Although, we will have a larger and more organized networking event in the spring, this is a great chance to get in at the beginning and to help move WAW into another exciting expansion. Please join us on January 27th!

Warmly,
Nogie King
Executive Director

Wisdom at Work Book Club
Jan.14; 4:00 PM at Central Market on N. Lamar

The Wisdom at Work book club met in November for another lively discussion. We enjoyed  Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions by Guy Kawasaki and chose our selections for the first few months of the new year.

Please join us for our January Book Club meeting when we explore The Medici Effect: What Elephants and Epidemics Can Teach Us About innovation by Frans Johansson.

No registration is necessary, but feel free to drop us an email if you know that you are attending so that we might choose a big table.

The Unlived Life Within Us vs. Resistance

At WAW we bring in inspiring speakers each month to touch the hearts and engage the brains of participants. We host social events and workshops so that people can connect, go deeper and build community. We do a great job of nurturing those who are out there making the world a better place.

But the WAW leadership is constantly asking, “How are these ideas being implemented in the real world of work?” For eight years we have been asking, “Should we focus more on corporate and governmental workplaces?” It is an ongoing exploration about whether we should continue to inspire the individual or whether we should shift to changing organizations themselves.

Clearly the answer is not an “either/or” but instead a “both/and” solution.  Regardless of the organizational structure, it’s the people that need the help.  Contrary to  IRS behavior, businesses are not people. Whether they are harshly hierarchical or mushy consensus based; whether they have a corporate structure or are non-profit; or whether they are a giant manufacturing operation or a one-man shop - all organizations are made up of people.

And humans are driven by their beliefs. Unfortunately, many, many people operate from fear in their workplaces.  It is a fear of loosing our livelihood that keeps us from speaking up against inhumane workloads or a disrespectful boss.  It is fear of failure that prevents us from offering our creative ideas for cash flow problems.  It is fear of looking stupid that gets us tied in knots like a pretzel in a vain attempt to impress those at the top.  And it is fear of not enough that allows greed to overshadow compassion for our fellow man.

Does an organization like WAW need to challenge the status quo of lemming-like behavior in the workplace? Do we need to be more obvious with our “message”? Absolutely! AND we will continue to nurture the individual heart so that more and more people begin to step up, speak out and move us all forward into a world of work that is meaningful, fulfilling and guided by the heart.
